Are you worried about the possible outbreak of the Avian Flu among humans? You should be! I hope that all of the publicity about the Bird Flu proves to be a false alarm, but I have to tell you that from what I have learned so far about the Avian Flu, I think that the worst thing any of us could do is to ignore it and hope it goes away, because it may not and I shudder to think about it ever mutating to where it can be spread from human to human. Let's take a look at what we know so far about the Avian Flu:
First of all, the Avian Flu has not yet mutated and there is no need for panic, but there certainly is plenty of reasons for concern and a need to be vigilant, because the flu could easily mutate to one that is spread by humans - and it is the very nature of viruses to mutate. We should also be mindful of the fact that the world is due for another outbreak of a widespread and dangerous influenza epidemic of the kind that appear to occur on a regular basis about every 30 years.
If the Avian Flu does mutate to a human flu and is even partially as deadly as some predict, the resulting worldwide pandemic could be an epic modern day plague that changes the world as we know it and makes HIV, 9/11, the great Tsunami and the destruction of New Orleans seem mild by comparison - and there would likely be very little the world can do to prevent it. We can only hope that the next big worldwide influenza outbreak does not involve the current Avian Flu, or any other avian flu, because such flu would be a type that humans have not been exposed to and thus have no built in resistance to. Owing to this lack of built in resistance, such an outbreak involving that kind of flu could prove to be uniquely horrific.
In a normal outbreak of influenza, the most vulnerable are usually the elderly, the very young, and those who are already ill or otherwise in a weakened state - in other words, those whose immune systems are not strong enough to successfully ward off and fight illness. While a human version of the Avian Flu is likely to be every bit as deadly or more so for those who are the usual flu victims, unlike the usual varieties of influenza, the Avian Flu would actually be even more deadly for the group that is usually least affected by flu outbreaks: the most robust and healthy among us, the adults in the prime of life. That is because an avian flu like the Avian Flu turns the body's own immune system against itself and a strong immune system can become a deadly instrument of death as it over-reacts to a threat it has never been exposed to and releases a torrent of chemicals to combat the new threat which end up literally filling and eating up the lungs, suffocating what had been a strong and vigorous individual.
Such was exactly the case in a previous outbreak of another avian flu, one very similar to the Avian Flu. The Spanish Flu of 1918-19 was the most deadly epidemic in recorded history, killing 30 to 40 million or more people in one year – more than were killed in any war including Great World War, more than were killed in the 4 terrifying years of the Plague of Black Death (the Bubonic Plague) of 1347-1351, and more than were killed by HIV-AIDS in it’s first 25 years of existence. In the United States it infected 28% of all Americans, caused the deaths of at least 675,000 and in a single year was responsible for a 10 year drop in the life expectancy rate. In 1918, the death rate for influenza and pneumonia for 15 to 35 year olds was 20 times higher than in previous years.
Many authorities fear that if the modern day Avian Flu mutates to one that can be spread by humans, it could be an even more deadly flu than the one in 1918-19. Indeed, where humans have been exposed to infected birds and contracted the Avian Flu so far, the death rate appears to be significantly higher than it was for the deadly Spanish Flu.
The picture becomes truly staggering when you add to the expected high death rate the fact that the world population is now 2 1/2 times greater than it was in 1918-19 and not only is the population much larger, it is also much more concentrated with much more human interaction. And then you have the fact that, unlike the horse and buggy days of 1918-19, modern travel brings humans almost instantly to and from all points of the globe.
In all likelihood, only an immediate worldwide quarantine and shutdown of all travel would have a chance at stopping the spread of a worldwide pandemic, and that is something that is both unachievable and, at this point, unthinkable (although if the pandemic were to turn out to be as dire as some predict, such measures would probably be attempted out of desperation, but would surely prove far too late to stop the spread of the disease). Given the woeful response to the destruction of New Orleans, and the shortage of flu shots caused by the loss of a single facility only last year, perhaps one can more easily understand the estimates of many authorities and scientific figures that forecast staggering death tolls, some as high as 300 million or more worldwide.
The world has largely forgotten the horrible death tolls of the Spanish Flu, as well as the plague-like conditions that led to quarantines, death wagons, corpses lying abandoned in public streets, and breakdowns of social order and lawlessness that broke out in many places around the world. For those of us who would like a reminder, I suggest a trip to an old cemetery and take a look at the tombstones and grave markers for the years 1918-19, see how many there are compared to other years and how many times you will find multiple deaths in the same family for those years. It was a horrible time, now largely forgotten and to a great deal overshadowed by the end of World War I, but it is a lesson for us all if only we will open our eyes and see.
Perhaps the nightmare scenario I have painted is merely the stuff of dreams, and I certainly hope that proves to be the case. But I strongly suggest that we all take steps to prepare for the worst, just in case. Better that than be like the old fellow on the side of Mount Saint Helens who ignored all the warning signs, disbelieved all the scientists and scoffed at the idea of a deadly eruption right up to the point that he was incinerated.
While there may be little the world's governments may be able to do to stop the spread of a truly horrible influenza pandemic, there are things that we all can do to help avoid catching such a flu and to fight it off if we do catch it. Common sense tells us to practice very good hygiene and to avoid exposure to those who are infected. If a vaccine is available, it is probably a better idea to take it than not - even though vaccines are likely to be in short supply, will likely be mere guesswork since the virus has yet to mutate to a form that can be spread by humans and is likely to continue to mutate once it does, and is likely to contain mercury due to the probable use of an agent called thimerosal that is used to sterilize flu vaccines.
Beyond those obvious measures, I have also compiled the following information for anyone who wishes to avoid and combat influenza:
Avoiding the Flu:
The good news is that you can take steps to help you avoid the Bird Flu or any other flu when it comes, and to survive it if you happen to catch it. Included in these steps would be the things that you should do to protect yourself from virtually all diseases and illnesses: get plenty of rest, exercise, quit smoking, eat a nutritious diet, avoid stress and, above all, to make your body's natural first line of defense, your immune system, strong and robust.
Some of the very best immune boosters are:
• Echinacea (Despite the latest study)
• Pau d’arco
• Suma
• Astragalus
• Medicinal mushrooms
• Beta glucans
• Aloe vera
• Alkygycerol
• Lactoferrin
• Bovine colostrums
• Glutathione
• Mangosteen
The next thing you should do is to also take one or more good natural anti-viral agents, ESPECIALLY if the Bird Flu does mutate and begin to spread from human to human, because unlike other illnesses or flues, the Bird Flu will use your own immune system to attack you. This is because we have never been exposed to a strain of flu like the Bird Flu and it is likely that biochemical cascade of immune cells and immune system bio-chemicals such as interferon, interleukin, monokines and cytokines will literally pour into the lungs and eat your lungs up. With the Bird Flu, it is essential to also include good natural anti-viral supplements along with immune boosters - and it is a good idea to do that anyway.
Among the very best natural pathogen destroyers are:
• Garlic
• Olive leaf extract
• Oil of wild mountain oregano
• Grapefruit seed extract
• Colloidal Silver
A third thing to do would be to take regular preventative doses of a natural remedy known as “Oleander Soup”, which can be made at home according to the instructions in the e-book “Cancer’s Natural Enemy” (written by the author of this article).
Oleander extract has been proven in clinical trials, decades of medical practice and literally centuries of use as a folk remedy to be a very strong immune booster and disease and illness preventer. It has also demonstrated strong anti-viral abilities in the way that it attacks and kills cancer cells, as well as it’s effectiveness against hepatitis-C and HIV.
The fourth thing you should do is endeavor to stop the spread of airborne viruses during the flu season:
• Protect yourself from others by gargling daily with 1 drop each of the essential oils of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and lemon in a glass of warm water; stir well before each mouthful. Do not swallow.
• Mix a blend of essential oils to use in your diffuser or for use in steam inhalation.
Blend together:
o ravensare - 3 parts
o naiouli or eucalyptus - 1 part
o lemon - 1 part
o rosewood - 1 part
o lavender - 1 part
Ravensare and naiouli have antiviral properties, while the other essential oils in the blend act as antiseptics while at the same time providing a wonderful aroma.Diffuser Application - Add about 50 drops of the above blend to your diffuser at a time.Fumigate the house with oils to help prevent the spread of flu. Put 2-3 drops on a radiator to evaporate or add 10 drops of essential oils to a small plant spray filled with water. Spray the room frequently.
Natural Measures to Consider Should You Get the Flu:
Hydrotherapy for Flu:
• Promote sweating by taking hot baths, hot foot-baths and other heat therapies. Keep the feet warm at all times during sickness and as a preventive measure. Low body temperature decreases resistance to viruses and bacteria, while heat burns up and destroys the virus.
• To warm feet, soak them for five to ten minutes in a hot mustard bath. Dissolve I tbsp. mustard powder in 4 cups of hot water.
• A hot bath followed by a cold mitten friction rub, two to four times a day, loosens congestion, improves circulation and strengthens the immune system, speeding healing from the flu.
• To do a cold mitten friction rub, proceed as follows: Dip a small towel or washcloth into cold (50° to 60°F) water. Curl one hand into a fist and wrap the cloth around it. Use your fist to rub your other arm in a vigorous circular motion, beginning with the fingers and finishing at the shoulder. Dip the cloth in the cold water again and repeat. Your skin should be pink. Dry your arm with a towel using the same vigorous circular movement. Repeat the process on your other arm and on your legs, feet, chest and abdomen.
Juice Therapy for Flu:
• Apple and dark grape juices are often recommended for those fighting the flu. They have properties that work against congestion and runny nose. Dark grape juice is rich in tannins, substances that have been shown to kill viruses under laboratory conditions.
• Dilute the juices if they are too sweet. Drink them at room temperature. Pear, cranberry and, especially, pomegranate juices are also helpful for combating flu.
Naturopathy for Flu:
• Hot Bath - Add 30-60 ml (2-4 tbsp) of Epsom Salts to hot water and take a hot bath. After the bath go straight to bed.
• Vitamins - As soon as the symptoms of flu start, take high levels of Vitamin C to boost the immune system, around 3,000-4,000 mg to start with, reducing over 3 -4 days to 500 mg until you feel completely better.
• Diet - Drink fruit juices until the fever has passed.
• Now eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grains.
• Cold Compress - If very hot and sweaty, try applying a cool compress to the chest and trunk.
Aromatherapy for Flu/Colds:
• Steam Inhalation - Mix a blend of essential oils to use in your diffuser or for use in steam inhalation.
Blend together:
o ravensare - 3 parts
o naiouli or eucalyptus - 1 part
o lemon - 1 part
o rosewood - 1 part
o lavender - 1 part
Add six to eight drops of the above blend to a bowl of just-boiled water. Place a towel over your head and inhale. Repeat this treatment two or three times a day, if necessary.
• Several oils have considerable anti- viral activity, and help to boost the immune system. For maximum effectiveness, it is important that you use them at the earliest sign of influenza or in some cases before contracting cold/flu to boost your immune system as a preventative.
• Essential oils of basil, eucalyptus, peppermint, and pine help to ease nasal congestion. Choose one to three of these oils and use them as inhalants or in steam inhalation treatments.
• For chest congestion, a steam inhalation treatment made with basil, pine, and/ or tea tree oil can help to clear mucus and ease breathing. Rubbing a massage oil prepared with these oils over the chest may also be helpful.
• An aromatherapy bath prepared with elemi, myrrh, pine, and/ or tea tree oil can help to soothe achy feeling all over your body that accompanies flu. Use a lukewarm bath for fever, a hot bath for chills.
• For chills:
o Add 3 drops of rosemary and 3 drops of ginger or black pepper essential oils to your bath.
o Mix 5 drops of ravensare and 15 drops of rosewood in ½ ounce of carrier oil such as olive or almond. This makes an energizing massage oil blend.
• Other Essential Oils Useful for Flu:
o Tea Tree oil
o Eucalyptus oil
o Lemon oil
o Lavender oil
• If you come down with the flu, add 10 to 20 drops of tea tree to hot water and take a hot bath. This may help your immune system fight the viral infection and ease your symptoms. Use a pure, unadulterated form of tea tree oil; adulterated forms can be irritating to the skin.
• To help alleviate and disinfect dry air passages, add 10 drops of tea tree oil to a bowl of hot water or vaporizer and leave in bedroom overnight. A small handkerchief sprinkled with a few drops of the oil and left under the pillow may help as well.
Caution: Do Not Overdo it!. Prolonged inhalation of essential oils can cause an enlarged liver.
• If you have a congested nose or chest, add a few drops of essential oils of eucalyptus globulus (E. globulus) or peppermint (Mentha piperita) to a steam vaporizer.
Caution: If you are asthmatic, be cautious the first time you try this; if you have not been exposed to essential oils before, inhaling the vapor may actually precipitate an attack.
Ayurvedic Remedies for Flu:
Ayurvedic practitioners recommend the following strategies to combat flu:
• At the first sign of the flu, switch to a bland diet. Eat soft-cooked rice (rice that has a very soft, moist texture created by a longer cooking time with more water) with a pinch of cumin, ginger powder and turmeric for seasoning. In India, broken rice is used for this purpose with generous amount of water so that we will get a soup in the end. The ginger and cumin heat up your body, so you can sweat out toxins. Turmeric has antibiotic and antiseptic qualities. You can also add few cloves of garlic cut into small pieces to the mixture as garlic is very good for flu.
• To ease the congestion that can accompany the flu:
o ½ teaspoon sitopaladi powder
o ½ teaspoon sudarshan
o ½ teaspoon of honey
Mix the ingredients well. Take a teaspoonful of this mixture every few hours. Your symptoms will disappear quickly.
• For Severe Flu Symptoms - Take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for 3 days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold and clear the sinuses. A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ingredient, which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.
• Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.
Herbal Remedies:
Herbal remedies cannot cure a cold or flu. But they can bring relief of symptoms, stimulate the immune system and speed recovery. Here are several herbal remedies useful for colds and flu.
• Corn starch, water and lemon. Mix together in a cup. One cup should be enough.
• Water, lemons, cinnamon sticks and honey. Put a gallon of water in a large pot on the stove. Add four lemons cut in quarters and two sticks of cinnamon. Bring water to a full boil and then let steep for five or more minutes. Drink one cup several times a day if you are able to stay home and rest and one or two cups at night, otherwise just drink at night. Best taken at the beginning of flu symptoms. This remedy should help you sweat out the flu, help ease any sore throat you may have and also keep you hydrated.
• Tea, lemon, orange juice and brandy. Works like a charm. Just make a cup of tea, squeeze half a lemon and half an orange into the tea and put two teaspoons of brandy and you should feel much better soon.
• One garlic clove and a sharp knife. Cut raw garlic as thin as possible and put the garlic slices on your tongue. Do not chew, just place on the tongue and then swallow. Best when taken at the first signs of flu symptoms
• Eucalyptus, burnt sugar, lemon and water. Boil the water and add eucalyptus, burnt sugar, lemon juice and/or lemon rind, and continue to boil for five minutes. Drink the tea hot, preferably just before going to bed.
• Colloidal silver. A half teaspoon of colloidal silver for children and a teaspoon for adults can be swallowed to ease or eliminate flu symptoms. If you take colloidal silver regularly, you may never get the flu.
• At the first sign of a flu, put a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide into each ear, one ear at a time. Keep the solution in for 10 minutes or until the bubbling stops. Your temperature should start dropping within minutes, and your flu should be gone within 12 to 14 hours.
• Goldenseal tea. Use goldenseal tea bags (not pills or capsules) to make tea. Drink a cup before bed (sweeten with honey or Stevia if desired).
• Herbal Fever Remedy
o 1 ounce dried Elder Flowers
o 1 ounce dried Peppermint Leaves
o ½ pint distilled water
Mix the herbs. Place in a quart saucepan. Pour 1/2 pints of distilled boiling water over it. Cover and allow to steep in a hot place for 10 to 15 minutes (do not boil). When ready, strain into another saucepan. Sweeten with honey if desired. This remedy drops high temperature associated with flu quite effectively. In some cases, the temperature has been reduced from 104 to 99 degrees within two hours!! According to Dr. Dr. Edward E. Shook, well known herbalist, "there is no remedy for colds and fevers of any description equal to this simple life-saving formula." More Information.
• Psyllium - Boneset Flu Remedy: This remedy is useful for flu as well as for backaches and headaches.
• Peppermint-Rosemary-Elder Flu Remedy: This remedy is good for colds with flu Symptoms.
• Echinacea and goldenseal stimulate the immune sys tem. Goldenseal also helps to soothe mucous membranes. Add 10-15 drops of a combination of echinacea and goldenseal to herbal teas at the first sign of a sniffle to boost the immune system. Take one dose of an echinacea and goldenseal combination remedy supplying 250 to 500 milligrams of echinacea and 150 to 300 milligrams of goldenseal three times daily for five days.
• An infusion of boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) may relieve aches and fever and clear congestion: Simmer 1 cup boiling water with 2 tsp of the herb for 10 to 15 minutes; drink a cupful every hour, as hot as you can stand it.
• A comforting herbal tea may be made from an infusion of equal measures of elderflowers, peppermint and hyssop. Caution: Take only small doses of hyssop (no more than 1-2g three times daily).
• To combat chills, try taking 30 drops of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) or elder (Sambucus nigra) flower tincture every four hours until your chills are gone.
• Use a warming tea made of Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), Cayenne (Capsicum minimum) and ground Ginger (Zingiber officinalis).
• To help yourself rest and relax, take a cup of chamomile tea twice a day.
• Use inhalations of chamomile, eucalyptus or thyme. These help loosen mucus and heal the throat, nasal passages and bronchial tubes.
• Horsetail inhalations reduce swelling of mucous membranes.
• At the first sign of the flu, begin taking the Chinese botanical formula Yin Qiao. (This remedy usually is not helpful after the third day of symptoms.) Take two or three tablets three times a day, up to twelve tablets in a twenty- four-hour period, during the acute phase of the flu. After the symptoms start to ease, reduce the dosage to one tablet three times daily for one week.
• In a 1995 Israeli study, elderberry extract was found to reduce both the severity of symptoms and the duration of flu (two to three days in the treated group versus six days in the placebo group). Choose an extract standardized to contain 5 percent total flavonoids and take 500 milligrams twice daily.
• Garlic helps to detoxify the body. Take 500 milligrams (or one clove) three times a day for up to five days.
• Take ginger tea. Ginger tea is antiviral and helps break up the mucus and congestion. Ginger tea is excellent if the stomach is affected. To make the tea, boil 2 tablespoons of grated fresh ginger in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes, then remove from the heat and steep for 10 minutes. Take a cup as needed.
• Onion or nasturtium inhalations disinfect.
• Ginkgo biloba leaf inhalations kill bacteria and heal the cells of the damaged mucous membranes almost immediately.
• Inhale steam for fifteen minutes three times daily in acute stage. When the condition is improving, inhale steam in the evening before retiring for a week or so to help heat the bronchial passages.
• When feeling more feverish, induce sweating by taking infusions of Catmint (Nepeta cataria) and/or Elderflower (Sambucus nigra).
• To help alleviate and disinfect dry air passages, add 10 drops of tea tree oil to a bowl of hot water or vaporizer and leave in bedroom overnight. A small handkerchief sprinkled with a few drops of the oil and left under the pillow may help as well.
• At the onset of a flu, drink lindenflower tea with 2 drops of lemon balm oil, thyme tea with honey, rose hip tea or acerola juice. When you start to sweat, quickly go to bed and continue sweating for one hour. Change clothes, rub body dry and try to steep. This therapy often stops the flu before it becomes full blown.
• Gargle regularly with sage tea to disinfect mouth, and use sage inhalations to reduce inflammation.
• Wash body with an infusion of thyme or juniper needles.
• If you are suffering from muscular aching, use an infusion of Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) alone, or in combination with Catmint (Nepeta cataria) and/or Elderflower (Sambucus nigra).
• Chinese Herbal Formula for Flu - Gan Mao Dan (Common Cold and Flu Pills)

Important Herbs for Flu
• Echinacea - Echinacea has been a traditional favorite for colds and flu. Double blind studies in Germany have shown that infections with flu-like symptoms clear more rapidly when taking echinacea.1 Echinacea appears to work by stimulating the immune system. Taking 3–5 ml of tincture or 300 mg of dried root powder three times per day is usually recommended.
• Elderberry:- Elderberry is another herb that has been used in treating flu. This herb contains two compounds that are active against flu viruses. It also prevents the virus from invading respiratory tract cells. A patented Israeli drug (Sambucol) that contains elderberry is active against various strains of viruses. In a clinical trial testing Sambucol, twenty percent of flu sufferers who used it showed significant relief of fever, muscle aches and other symptoms within 24 hours, and another 73 percent felt better after the second day. In three days, 90 percent were reported completely cured. In a similar group that received an inactive treatment (a placebo), only 26 percent were improved in two days, and it took most of them six days to feel well again. Sambucol also stimulates the immune system and has shown some activity in preliminary trials against other viruses, such as Epstein-Barr, herpes and even HIV. In a small double blind trial, patients with influenza2 were found to recover three times faster when they took one capsule of elderberry extract four times daily compared to patients taking placebo.
You can take the medication or take the herb by making a tea from the herb: Make elderberry-flower tea by steeping 3 to 5 g of dried flowers in one cup of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Take 1 cup of this tea 3 times daily. Elderberry flower is generally regarded as safe. Side effects are rare and consist primarily of occasional mild gastrointestinal distress or allergic reactions. Its safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not established.
• Astragalus - Astragalus root has been used to enhance immunity for thousands of years in China. This herb is considered by herbal practitioners to be a tonic that strengthens the body’s resistance to disease. Astragalus can stimulate practically all of the processes of your immune system. It increases the number of stem cells in bone marrow and speeds their growth into active immune cells. Astragalus also may help boost levels of interferon, one of your body’s potent fighters against viruses. This, in turn, can help prevent or shorten the duration of colds and flu. Astragalus alson boosts the production of white blood cells called macrophages, whose function is to destroy invading viruses and bacteria. As soon as you discover the flu, take one 500- milligram capsule of astragalus four times a day until symptoms disappear. Then take one capsule twice a day for seven days to prevent a relapse.
• Garlic - Garlic is known to kill influenza virus in test tubes.3 It also stimulates the immune system and wards off complications such as bronchitis. Garlic contains several helpful compounds, including allicin, one of the plant kingdom's most potent, broad-spectrum antibiotics. This herb's aromatic compounds are readily released from the lungs and respiratory tract, putting garlic's active ingredients right where they can be most effective against cold viruses. Holistic practitioners often recommend taking several cloves of raw garlic per day during an infection. You can also take aged garlic extract, or consume products such as hot garlic bread or toast.
• Asian ginseng (eleuthero) - Asian ginseng have immune-enhancing properties, which play a potential role in preventing infection with influenza. Boneset has been shown in test tube and other studies to stimulate immune cell function. This may explain boneset’s traditional use to help fight off minor viral infections, such as the flu.
• Wild Indigo - Wild indigo contains polysaccharides and proteins that are believed to stimulate the immune system. It is used traditionally to fight the flu5 in combination with herbs such as echinacea, goldenseal, or thuja.
• Forsythia and honeysuckle - These herbs are used by Oriental Medicine practitioners to treat colds, flu and other viruses. They have real antiviral benefits. At the inception of cold or flu, mix honeysuckle and forsythia with lemon balm tea (lemon balm also has antiviral properties.) Take this tea before going to bed.
• Mullein - A tea made with mullein flowers provides throat-soothing mucilage and also has an expectorant effect. Herbalists think that this plant contains compounds that inhibit flu viruses. You can also make a tea with mullein leaf.
Other Herbs:
o Bayberry
o Boneset
o Calendula
o Ginger
o Goldenseal
o Lemon balm
o Oregon grape
o Thyme
Nutrition for Flu:
• If you don't feel like eating, do not force yourself. For a day or two, consume only liquids-water, juices, teas, and soups. Digesting liquids requires a lot less energy than digesting foods. This means that your body has more energy to fight the flu.
• Consume easily digested foods such as juices, lemonade (hot or cold), herbal teas, applesauce, and lots of nourishing broth and homemade soups. Miso and chicken soup are good choices.
• Take mushrooms soup. Mushrooms of choice include shiitake, maitake, and reishi mushrooms. They are shown in studies to boost the body's immune response.
• Getting plenty of fluids, including soups, is particularly important. Drink at least six to eight glasses of liquid daily. Fluids help to thin secretions, making it easier for the body to clear them, and also help to prevent constipation and flush toxins from the body.
Sick People Soup - Here is a great soup to take when you are down with cold and flu. It comes from Rosita Arvigo, author of "Rainforest Home Remedies."
o 1/2 head cabbage, chopped
o 1 onion, chopped
o 1 head garlic, chopped
o 3 carrots, sliced
o 3 pieces celery, diced
o 6 Tbsp ginger, grated
o ¼ c miso (soybean paste)
o 2 qts water
o juice of 1 lemon or lime
Boil the vegetables in the water until tender (about thirty minutes), then add ginger and garlic and allow to boil another five minutes. Remove from heat. Take a bit of the hot soup from the pot and mix with the miso to form a thick liquid. Add to the soup and serve. Squeeze a bit of fresh lime juice into the bowl. For added health boosts, add sliced agaricus, reishi, shitake or maitake mushrooms to the boiling vegetables and sprinkle crushed garlic on the soup before serving.
• When there is fever, take liquids only.
• Recommended liquids: Warm broth, vegetable juices and herb teas.
• Avoid dairy products and sugar. They increase and thicken mucus. Avoid a milky drink at night if you have chest problems, since this can contribute to congestion of the chest by morning.
• Red beet juice makes the flu virus inactive.
• Condensed grape juice strengthens the heart muscles.
• Parsley, celery, watercress, garlic, lemon, carrot and coconut juices are nourishing and help to cleanse and promote healing.
• Drink fruit juices after diluting. Limit the intake of sugars.
• Increase the proportion of vitamin C-rich foods in the diet, such as tomatoes, raw green peppers, carrots, strawberries and citrus fruit. This vitamin is easily destroyed by the process of oxidation, so do not leave peeled, chopped fruit or vegetables to stand for a long time before eating. Overcooking also leads to loss of vitamin C, especially if fruit or vegetables are boiled. Vegetables and fruit are best eaten raw, and if vegetables must be cooked, steam them, which preserves essential nutrients.
• Eat fresh, raw fruit and vegetables, whole grains, garlic, pulses, beans, small helpings of fish, nuts and seeds. These foods appear to increase resistance to infection and improve vitality.
• Use unrefined, cold-pressed flax seed oil as a salad dressing. Flax seed oil is an excellent source of the omega-3 essential fatty acid and also contains the omega-6 essential fatty acid. These fats help strengthen cell membranes, thereby speeding healing and strengthening resistance to infection. In the body.
• Eat sea plants or algae. These can re-mineralize the body after overexposure to processed foods. Spirulina, alfalfa, chlorella or seaweeds can be added to soups or juices in powder or capsule form.
• Garlic can also help ward off a cold by inhibiting the growth of staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria.
• Avoid food and drinks that put extra strain on the liver. The liver is responsible for efficient detoxification of the body. The foods to avoid include convenience foods containing substantial amounts of chemicals such as colorings and preservatives, and alcohol, which also depletes the body of vitamin C.
Nutritional Supplements:
• Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Bioflavonoids - Vitamin C is well-known for treating and preventing colds. Studies show that vitamin C can shorten the duration of common colds and flu and even prevent them. Taken in large enough doses, vitamin C can boost your immune system by pumping enough fuel into white blood cells to destroy invading viruses and bacteria. Vitamin C increases interferon levels and has interferon-like properties itself. It acts as a natural antihistamine that helps dry up watery eyes and reduce nasal and chest congestion. It is also a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent the damage that your body endures when viruses or bacteria attack your immune system. Dockworkers given 100 mg of vitamin C each day for ten months caught influenza 28% less than their coworkers not taking vitamins. Moreover, the average infection was 10% shorter in those taking vitamin C.1 Other studies have reported that vitamin C in high doses (2 grams every hour for twelve hours) can lead to rapid improvement of influenza infections.2, 3
• At the first sign of cold or flu symptoms, take 500 milligrams of vitamin C with bioflavonoids or rose hips four to six times a day. The bioflavonoids and rose hips strengthen the vitamin C’s infection-fighting power by 35 percent, according to experts. Start taking Vitamin C as soon as you can. There are no adverse effects from taking high dosages of vitamin C. If you experience diarrhea, reduce the dosage of Vitamin C. Use bioflavonoids along with vitamin C for their synergistic effect.
• Vitamin A is a nutrient vital to the mucous membranes throughout the respiratory system during a cold or flu. It is known as the anti-infection vitamin. It battles viruses and bacteria in two ways. By keeping the cells healthy all along your respiratory tract, it provides a barrier that resists microorganisms. If some invading microorganisms manage to breach the barrier, you want to have antibodies and lymphocytes ready to destroy them. Vitamin A helps your body provide those reinforcements.
• As soon as you notice cold or flu symptoms, take 100,000 international units (IU) of vitamin A daily for three days, then reduce the dosage to 25,000 IU for one week or until symptoms disappear.
Caution: These are very high doses, please check with your doctor before taking this much.
• Beta-carotene, Vitamin A’s precursor, is rich in antioxidant power and antiviral properties. It bolsters immunity and protects the thymus gland. It also protects you from viruses by enhancing mucous membrane secretions. By producing the secretions, the beta-carotene prevents the virus from invading your body. If you feel a cold or flu coming on, take 100,000 IU of beta-carotene for 10 to 14 days, then cut the dosage to 50,000 IU a day to prevent future respiratory infections.
• Zinc - Zinc supplementation is recommended for immune system support. Zinc lozenges soothe a sore throat and help fend off a cold before it takes hold. Zinc stimulates the immune system by generating new white blood cells and whipping them into shape to battle viruses. If you have too little zinc, your production of white blood cells may drop, and that can increase your risk of catching a cold, flu, or other upper respiratory infection. In one study, children who got 10 milligrams of zinc daily for 60 days were much less likely to get respiratory infections than children getting less. In fact, the children who got enough zinc were 70 percent less likely to have fevers, 48 percent less likely to have coughs, and 28 percent less likely to have mucus buildup.
• Take 5 to 10 milligrams of zinc five times daily for five days to one week. Take zinc with food to prevent stomach upset. Be careful not to consume too much zinc. Doctors recommend taking no more than 15 milligrams of zinc a day. Zinc gluconate in lozenge form has been found to shorten the duration of cold symptoms. In a study, participants who sucked on one zinc gluconate lozenge (containing about 13 milligrams of zinc) every two hours while awake got rid of their coughs, nasal congestion, sore throat, and headaches three to four days sooner than those who didn’t get any supplementation. Don’t take them for longer than one week, because they can weaken your immune system.
• Garlic - Garlic is very beneficial especially at the beginning of a cold of flu. It warms the body and acts as an antiviral and antibacterial.
• Thymus glandular extract boosts immune function by increasing the number and activity of infection-fighting white blood cells. Take 250 to 500 milligrams twice a day. This is especially important for people over forty, as thymus function declines with age.
Recommended dosages:
o Vitamin C, with bioflavonoids, 1,000 mg every few hours throughout the day, up to bowel tolerance
o Zinc lozenges, with 3 mg copper, every few hours, up to 70 mg daily during a cold and 30 mg daily as a preventive.
o Garlic, 2 capsules three times daily
o Vitamin A, 25,000 IU daily (avoid during pregnancy)

LIPID LOWERING AND RISK OF STATIN SIDE EFFECTS
The Molecular Research Institute of Tuft's New England Medical Center reported recently the results of a large study of the relationship of statin side effects to the magnitude of lipid lowering achieved.
Common sense says that the higher the statin dose with its resulting fall in cholesterol, the greater the side effect problem, right? If you said right, you are wrong and if you said wrong you are wrong. The results of this study proved to be interesting.
We have learned that the benefit of statin drugs on atherosclerosis with its stroke and heart attacks is not due to cholesterol reduction but to the powerful anti-inflammatory effect of statins.
Atherosclerosis is now considered by most to be an inflammatory process. Cholesterol, our former villain, is now felt to be irrelevant and is there in the plaques solely as an innocent bystander to the body's inflammatory response. And one of the concerns about this new anti-inflammatory role of statins is that it is mediated through inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B, a transcriptase vital not only to our body's inflammatory response but also our entire immunodefence system. To inhibit inflammation therefore must also inhibit our ability to neutralize viruses, bacteria and mutagenic cells. You cannot have one without the other. If you lower heart attack death rates by the use of statins, you increase cancer death rates. And that is exactly what Alawi and his group found................

Teeth Whitening
Bicarbonate of soda. Not baking powder. Use to brush your teeth, follow with dental floss and then use toothpaste that contains no fluoride.
Wood ash. Wood ash whitens your teeth is because it contains potassium hydroxide (a.k.a. lye). However, only hard wood ash contains significant concentrations of potassium hydroxide, soft wood ash does not. Be sure to follow with a toothpaste that contains no fluoride. You may want to exercise caution when using hard wood ash too often as a tooth whitening agent. The harshness of the potassium hydroxide could significantly damage your teeth over time.
Strawberries. Mash a few strawberries in a bowl until you achieve a paste-like consistency and use this to brush your teeth, just as you would toothpaste. Be sure to follow with a toothpaste that contains no fluoride. Whitens really well
Fresh crunchy veggies. Eating fresh crunchy veggies and fruits such as: carrots, broccoli, celery, apples, strawberries, and cucumbers can help whiten your teeth.
Hydrogen Peroxide. Before brushing your teeth gargle with a small capful of peroxide, concentrating it on your teeth (don't swallow), and rinse thoroughly with water. You may dilute the peroxide 50-50 with water if you cannot stand it full strength. You should see results in about a week or so.
Notes:
Do NOT use lemon or baking powder, as these can damage your teeth, as any dental professional can tell you. Most teeth whitening methods should not be continued for prolonged periods or the enamel may be damaged. Also, remember that any food or beverage that can stain a white t-shirt, can stain your teeth.
To help combat and prevent gum disease, add some CoQ10 to your homemade toothpastes

Oleander Found to Induce Autophagy Against Cancer Cells
by Tony Isaacs
September 19, 2007
Phoenix Biotech manager Dennis Knocke reported today that a new study by noted MD Anderson researcher Doctor Robert Newman, the lead research scientist in a number of important studies on oleander and oleander compounds, has recently finished a new study due to be published soon in peer reviewed journal which indicates that oleander induces and increases autophagy, a natural body defensive mechanism against cancer which encapsulates tumors and cancer cells.
The new study appears to provide an important new piece of evidence in understanding why oleander has proven to be successful against many forms of cancer. In previous studies on oleander, many of which were also led by Dr. Newman, oleander extracts have been shown to 1) inhibit angiogenesis, the process where cancer produces blood vessels and spreads, 2) inhibit the NF-kB factor in cancer cells, which is the process that cells use to protect themselves when they come under attack, 3) induce apoptosis, or normal cell death, in cancer cells, and 4) greatly stimulate immune activity.
Phoenix Biotech is the manufacturer of the patented oleander medication Anvirzel, which has passed FDA phase I toxicity trials and has been used successfully outside the United States for many years, including the Salud Integral Clinic in Honduras, which Phoenix Biotech owns.

Modern Medicine v. Nature in Treating Cancer - by Tony Isaacs
Western medicine, in contrast to at least 6000 years of natural medicine, treats the body as a collection of parts instead of as a synergistic organism. When it comes to treating broken bones and injured body parts, mainstream Western medicine is unequaled. When this same approach is used to treat illness and disease - fixing or repairing the parts where the symptoms of underlying illnesses manifest themselves, modern medicine fails miserably.
In the instance of cancer, instead of addressing the causes of cancer - toxins and a weakened immune system - we see instead treatments that either slash, burn or poison away the tumors and cancer cells, which further weakens an immune system cancer has already defeated and only worsens the conditions that led to cancer to begin with.
Even if initially successful at getting rid of existing cancer cells and tumors, the end result is a weakened body which may have major organ damage and which is more susceptible to the reappearance of the original cancer, as well as other forms of cancer and diseases.
For half a century or more, we have been told that a breakthrough or cure for cancer is just around the corner, yet the death rates for cancer remain virtually unchanged. Meanwhile, effective natural and alternative treatments which address and correct the actual causes of cancer continue to enjoy much greater success than the largely failed mainstream treatments - even as these natural alternatives suppressed and come under increasing attack by the medical establishment.
Profit plays a huge role in Western medicine and, because nature cannot be patented, there is no profit in conducting studies on natural remedies for cancer and illness. In fact, if studies were to prove the effectiveness of natural alternatives and those alternatives were to be approved for use in treating cancer and other illnesses, the result would be to admit cheaper, safer and more effective competition into a fiercely guarded market. Instead, such alternatives are heavily suppressed, discredited and passed off as "snake oil" and "voodoo medicine".
The cold, hard fact is that cancer and other degenerative and chronic illnesses are big business - to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars a year. When their only market place is our bodies, the vested interests of the trillion dollar world pharmaceutical empire, mainstream medicine and the institutions which depend on maintaining the status quo are not likely to allow such natural competition, even though the cost is millions of needless deaths and untold suffering.
A better plan for maintaining and increasing profit is to continue to bring new drugs into the market place which treat only symptoms and have serious side effects that lead to still more drugs in a never ending cycle so that by the time a male American reaches 65 years of age, he takes an average of 15 prescribed and over the counter medications every day - when it all started out with one or two conditions that could have been treated safely and effectively by natural means. A good model for profit, but a horrible one for humanity.
We now have over 15,000 patented and approved drugs, 95% of which have significant side effects. It is no accident that our doctors have been taught for generations, just as we have been, that the way to treat illness and disease is to prescribe approved medications – medications that are made by the single largest source by far of funding for medical education: the world pharmaceutical companies. What exactly has this mountain of medicine actually cured in the past half century? Certainly not cancer!
By far the most effective way to beat and avoid cancer is to remove the causes of cancer and to make your body as inhospitable to cancer and illness as possible. To understand what steps we should and can take, we should understand what we know about cancer:
We know that:
· The development of cancer indicates that our natural first line of defense, our immune system, has been defeated and that the presence of either toxins and pathogens, or some imbalance in our bodies have led to the development of cancer and enabled it to gain an upper hand.
· Cancer cannot develop without an impaired liver.
· Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, nor can it survive in a highly oxygenated environment.
· Detoxing and cleansing our colons and liver helps restore balance, prepares our bodies to better be able utilize natural immune boosters and cancer fighters and paves the way to rebuilding our livers and immune systems.
· Cancer cells are diseased, impaired and/or beset by pathogens and have lost the ability to to be die naturally via cellular apoptosis and be replaced by healthy cells. These cancerous cells simply become abnormal and outlive the other cells in their normal cell life/replacement cycle and end up crowding out a territory over time.
· Iodine, vitamin D, and potassium are all vital to beat and ward off cancer.
· Fresh air, pure water and sunshine are also vital to maintain healthy bodies, which can fight off and beat conditions like cancer.
· A natural diet of uncontaminated raw vegetables and raw fruits, with plenty of omega-3’s and balanced nutrition has been proven to be effective in numerous natural anti-cancer protocols.
· A great number of natural botanicals and supplements, such as those containing beta glucans and other long-chain polysacharrides, the oleander remedy I have written about, Colloidal Silver, Inositol (IP-6), the ABM mushroom, South Africa's "Cancer Bush" sutherlandia frutescans, cat's claw, pau d'arco, corialus versicolor mushroom, and many others have been proven to boost the immune system, destroy pathogens, protect our cells, and beat cancer.
· Sugar feeds cancer.
And so, when we go to an oncologist and are diagnosed with cancer what is the prescribed treatment? Does it incorporate ANY of the above elements? No, sadly it does not. Our doctor prescribes what he or she has been taught: cut out, radiate or poison the symptom and do nothing to address the underlying causes and natural imbalances that enabled led to the symptom.
As a result, the way is paved for the return of the cancer or the introduction of another cancer or serious condition. Even worse, the road to further illness is often made easier due to the damage to the immune system and major organs caused by the treatment of the symptom.
Nature, on the other hand, gives us an array of tools to beat cancer and the underlying causes that lead to cancer, including foods, vitamins, minerals, supplements and lifestyle choices. Here is a suggested protocol based on what we know about cancer and its causes and what nature and lifestyle choices have offer:
· As soon as possible, cleanse your body to get rid of built up toxins like heavy metals and pesticides, as well as the undigested food, fecal matter and gallstones that build up in the body by cleansing your colon and liver and by chelation to rid the body of heavy metals. Such contaminations are breeding grounds for, and causes of, disease and illness. A toxic and unclean body weakens the body's immune system that should be your first line of defense.Plus, once cleansed, the body is much more receptive to the good measures you take to rebuild your immune system and fight disease.
· Cleanse your environment to the greatest extent possible and eliminate bad habits. In an ideal world, you would move to the country where there was plenty of fresh air and sunshine and less stress. In the real world you may not find that possible, so eliminate common toxins in your household, workplace and other places you spend time.
· If you have mercury amalgam fillings in your teeth, have them replaced. In many instances, this step alone has led to elimination of cancer.
· Immediately eliminate bad habits and begin building build good ones so that you will make sure that you no longer have habits that weaken your immune system and that you will be able to build your body to fight and conquer illness. A sedentary lifestyle with a poor diet, lack of pure water, sunshine and fresh air, and constant exposure to toxins will in time lead to bad health conditions. Remember, bad health habits are open invitations for illness and disease to enter your body.
· Begin and maintain a healthy immune boosting and cancer fighting diet. A good balanced diet, pure water, fresh air, sunshine and exercise are some of the essentials. You will find that a good diet does not have to be a bad tasting diet – far from it! However, it should be noted that the very best and most healthy diet is one that is close to the diet our ancestors evolved to utilize: lots of fresh and uncooked vegetables, fruits, nuts, roots and tubers, and fish and meat uncontaminated by growth hormones, artificial fertilizers or pesticides – and little or no grain or dairy products. It should be noted that of all the foods, essentially only raw vegetables and fruits contribute to an alkaline pH.
· Rebuild and strengthen the body's natural immune system. It is very likely that a weakened immune system contributed to your illness in the first place. It is absolutely certain that a rebuilt and strengthened immune system will help you beat your illness and keep it at bay. Again, good diet, nutrition and habits are all important – they lay the foundation for a strong and healthyimmune system. However, they are not enough by themselves. You should build a good foundation and then make your body a healthy fortress against disease and illness. Quite simply, disease and illness hate healthy hosts. The stronger your immune system is, the harder it is for disease to survive and grow. And, to be the very strongest you can be, you need extra measures in the form of supplements as well as the healthiest foods. An oleander extractvery much like you get when you make oleander soup was tested in Europe in 1986 - 87 and found to have six times the immune stimulating activity of the most powerful immune stimulators known to man.
· Cleanse, restore and protect the liver before, during and after your anti-cancer and disease battle. Cancer cannot develop unless the liver is impaired to begin with. Plus, an effective cancer-fighting regimen will result in the release of a cascade of toxins that are released when cancer cells die. Such a release can overwhelm an already impaired liver and can even be fatal if measures are not taken to protect and regenerate the liver. Some of the very best anti-oxidants to used to protect and regenerate the liver are the ones used in the Berkson Clinical Study: Milk Thistle (silymarin), alpha lipoic acid and selenium.
· Maintain an alkaline pH and get plenty of oxygen to the cellular level. Cancer cannot survive in the presence of an alkaline cellular pH level, nor can it survive in the presence of highly oxygenated cells. Dr. Johanna Budwig of Germany has shown that for proper cellular utilization of oxygen to take place, our diets must contain adequate amounts of unsaturated fatty acids.
· Make sure you have plenty of iodine, potassium and Vitamin D. All have been proven to be essential in beating and avoiding cancer. As mentioned above, cancer cells have lost the ability to be shut off by the body in what is called cellular apoptosis. These cancerous cells simply become abnormal and outlive the other cells in their normal cell life/replacement cycle and end up crowding out a territory over time. Iodine goes in and both does away with the surrounding cyst where cancer has set up residence and then also goes in and allows the specific shut down of the individual cells that are abnormal, diseased, or beset w/ pathogens to make room for new cells.
· Drink plenty of pure water and get plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Water is essential for all healthy life; however, regular tap water contains trace amounts of hundreds to thousands of pesticides, carcinogens and other industrial pollutants. For that reason, the author recommends only the purest drinking water, such as reverse osmosis filtered water. Don't overdo the sunshine, but sunshine is essential to the production of vitamin D, and, strange as it may sound, has been found to be essential in warding off melanoma as well as other cancers.
· Exercise in moderation. Regular exercise does not have to be grueling, but it is essential. Exercise stimulates the immune system, stimulates the production of natural human growth hormone, stimulates the production of hormones and pheromones that make us happier and healthier, and simply leads to a longer and happier life period. Innumerable studies have demonstrated the overall health benefits of exercise and the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle lacking in exercise. It is not a coincidence that studies have shown up that those who exercise only a few hours each week have up to 50% less chance of developing many different kinds of cancer.
· The next element of beating your disease and keeping it at bay is to go on the attack. As a matter of fact, all of the elements of the this anti-cancer and disease protocol are elements of attack, because they make the body strong and inhospitable to disease. What I am talking about here is more than just making the body inhospitable to your disease – I am talking about going on the attack and wiping it out! In the case of cancer, there are many very potent anti-cancer supplements, such as the ones listed above and several others.
§ One such supplement, named OPC (not to be confusedwith the European anti-oxidant of the same name), basedon a remedy I have researched and written about , hasbeen used for the past three years in South Africa to treatHIV and cancer. Of approximately 350 HIV patients, all arestill alive and well with their symptoms either reversed orstabilized. Of 80 cancer patients, some in very late stages,72 are alive and well and either cancer free or with theircancers in remission and tumors shrinking. Of the 8 thatdid not survive, 5 were in their very final days and couldnot hold down the supplement. Another three succumbedto organ failure as a likely result of prior traditionalWestern treatment via chemo. Compare that with theresults of any mainstream medicine or treatment!
§ Perhaps the supreme cancer destroyer I have found isInositol/IP6, such as is found in the product Cell Forte. Aone to two month intensive regimen is best - and it seemsto just melt away tumors according to several users I havespoken with. One caution - Inositol/IP6 may depleteminerals unless you make sure to take a mineralsupplement such as plant-derived minerals (a good thingto do anyway). Be sure to get plenty of Calcium andMagnesium (a second good thing to do anyway). Also, Ifeel it is good to only take a maintenance dose most of thetime and even give it an occasional month break, with onlyone or two yearly intensive regimens.
§ Colloidal Silver is another must in my opinion - it has beenshown to be deadly to single cell organisms andpathogens. The caution with Colloidal Silver is that it isnot specific and you need to supplement with pro-biotics(t another good thing to do anyway).
§ Poly MVA is widely reported to have excellent results inbeating cancer and is an excellent immune booster as well.
· Remember, what you avoid can be just as important as what you consume: Avoid sugar to the greatest extent possible. Sugar feeds cancer and other illnesses and causes a myriad of other health problems. Refined sugar is also the number one single cause of health problems in the entire world! Likewise avoid bread and other items containing bleached white flour, which is essentially empty and harmful calories that convert to sugar once ingested. Other items to avoid include non-fermented soy, pork, MSG, ALL charredfoods and foods cooked at high temperature, aluminum and coated cookware, micro-waved food, food in plastic containers and styrofoam.
· The final key to winning your battle is your mental attitude. Remove as much stress from your life as you can and believe that you are going to win. Stress and worry accomplish nothing – worse, they are actually allies of illness and disease. You have surely heard the term "stress, the silent killer"? It's true! So you must do whatever it takes to remove stress from your life and make your mental attitude your ally. Meditate, take yoga, change jobs, retire, go fishing, find a pleasant hobby – do whatever you must to remove stress and have a positive mental outlook. Just remember, anyone who introduces orkeeps worry and stress in your life is neither a friend nor an ally during this fight. And make no mistake, it is a fight - likely the most important one of your life. But it is a fight you can and will win.
Think it, believe it and live it!
Some in the field of natural health will tell you that you can beat cancer through diet alone, or through diet and de-toxing. In many instances that is true, and some of the most effective and popular natural anti-cancer protocols, such as the Budwig Diet, are based on such a premise.
However, in my opinion, the more weapons you have in your natural arsenal, the greater your chances of success will be. That is why I advocate including one or more of the powerful natural supplements that have been proven to beat cancer and boost the immunes system, and which address what we know about cancer.
Our depleted soils and the introduction of modern industrial toxins and contaminants makes it hard to build a strong enough immune system through diet alone. Our immune systems were not designed to handle the multitude of modern toxins they now face, which is why cancer is largely a modern disease.
As a final note: for those of you who continue to believe the big lie that the harsh and ineffective options offered by mainstream medicine (and its half century record of broken promises to deliver a cure or significant breakthrough) are superior to nature, I ask: When did God become a quack?
Live long, live healthy, live happy!

A Plan for Living a Long and Healthy Life
By T. M. Isaacs
(Excerpted from the author’s book “How to Live a Long and Healthy Life”)
Good Things to Do & Consume
• Boiling, Baking (low temperature), poaching, steaming & roasting (low temperature keeps more of the good vitamins, nutrients, phytochemicals and so forth; heat destroys the nutrients in food and can cause the formation of harmful substances)
• Throw away meat broth left over from cooking (that’s where a lot of the fats and bad stuff goes)
• Keep and use fruit and vegetable broth left over from cooking (that’s where a lot of the vitamins and good stuff goes)
• Get a juicer! Use it for fruits & vegetables (fruit and vegetable juice in big quantities are some of the healthiest things you can consume)
• Eat smaller meals with healthy snacks such as nuts, vegetables and fruits between meals (helps you maintain a constant energy level and avoid overeating)
• Drink filtered or reverse-osmosis distilled water only, and drink plenty of it, but avoid tap water! (the average municipal water supply has trace amounts of over 2,000 bad chemicals, including pesticide, solvents and carcinogens)
• Garlic—preferably 3 cloves of raw garlic every day! (Garlic, long recognized as a natural broad spectrum antibiotic, is also a potent and proven natural cancer preventative and it is the natural enemy of cholesterol as well because it prevents cholesterol from sticking to the sides of our arteries)
• Turmeric (or curcumin) (This is one of the really important ones! A highly potent cancer fighter that recent tests have indicated protects cigarette smokers from developing cancer, it has also been reported recently to not only prevent Alzheimer’s but even reverse it! Turmeric, a member of the ginger family, contains a variety of bioactive substances called curcuminoids. The curry spice turmeric is also found in yellow mustard. The most active component is curcumin, an orange-yellow volatile oil that includes three curcuminoids–turmerone, atlantone, and zingiberone. Research shows that turmeric and its curcuminoids have a number of beneficial properties: (1) good antioxidant activity, comparing well with vitamin C, vitamin E, and superoxide dismutase; (2) anti-inflammatory activity that is comparable to steroidal and nonsteroidal drugs; (3) anticancer properties influencing all the steps of cancer formation: initiation, promotion, and progression; (4) protects the cardiovascular system by lowering serum cholesterol and inhibiting platelet aggregation; (5) protects the liver by several mechanisms; (6) in vitro and in vivo studies show curcuminoids can help with HIV in a number of ways, including acting as biological response modifiers, resulting in significant increases in CD-4 and CD-8 counts. Supplementation may prevent, or be helpful with, the following conditions: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS, HIV), Aging, Asthma, Atherosclerosis (heart disease), Cancer, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cataracts, Immuno-depression (immune function), Inflammation (including bursitis), Peptic Ulcers and Rheumatoid Arthritis.)
• Cayenne Pepper, Ginger & Sage (all potent cancer fighters. Cayenne pepper also promotes cardiovascular health, helps cure stomach ulcers, and a tincture of cayenne pepper can stop a heart attack in three minutes or less. Ginger also enhances circulation and acts as a catalyst for other herbs, to increase their effectiveness and it helps the body relieve congestion.)
• Broccoli and other Cruciferous Vegetables (cauliflower, cabbage, sprouts, cauliflower, horseradish, turnips, radishes, wassabi, and kale, etc. One prominent researcher said “If broccoli were a drug, it would be worth billions!” Broccoli boosts your immune system, reduces the incidence of cataracts, builds bones, and fights birth defects and heart disease, and, like other cruciferous vegetables, helps ward off various cancers such as stomach, colon, breast, etc.)
• Apple Cider Vinegar (Truly one of nature’s miracle substances, use of apple cider vinegar for medicinal purposes has been traced back as far as 3000 BC, and was used by Hippocrates, the Babylonians, Julius Caesar’s armies, Christopher Columbus’s crewmen, and ancient Samurai Soldiers to ward off disease and keep strong and fit. Be sure to use only natural non-distilled apple cider vinegar available at most health food stores – the kind you find on grocer’s shelves has been distilled to remove the natural cloudy appearance and has had most of the healthy live-giving enzymes, acids and trace minerals removed. If you do not have cancer, mix a teaspoon of organic locally produced honey with two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar three times a day. After a few months of regular use, you should notice improved health and vigor and the elimination of stiffness and joint pain.
• Tomatoes (Excellent source of lycopene. Tomatoes and tomato products lower cancer risk, increase your skin's sun-protection factor, and play a role in preventing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Eat one tomato a day. tomato sauce is great, the more the better, just avoid ones with added sugar. Tomatoes combined with broccoli enhance the effect of both vegetables! Don't like tomatoes? Try watermelon, persimmons, or pink grapefruit instead.)
• Green Tea (or black) (enhances health – especially cardiovascular health, boosts the immune system, prevents cancer, restricts bad cholesterol, controls high blood pressure, suppresses aging and more. Drink at least one cup a day.)
• Shitake Mushrooms (lowers cholesterol and improves immune system function, good for preventing high blood pressure and heart disease, for controlling cholesterol level, building resistance against viruses, and fighting diseases such as AIDS/HIV and cancers. Often available fresh, Shitake mushrooms are very flavorful when used in cooking! If you cannot find fresh, available as a supplement also.)
• Maitaike Mushrooms (high in nutrients including Vitamins B-2, C, D, niacin, magnesium, potassium, fiber, and amino acids, contains the polysaccharide compound beta-1.6-glucan which naturally stimulates the immune system and lowers blood pressure. Beneficial for obesity and diabetic patients, the Maitake mushroom may be best known for its cancer fighting ability. Tests in mice prove that it blocks tumor formation and boosts the immune system. Available fresh or as supplement)
• Reishi Mushrooms (The Reishi mushroom can increase the production of interleukin1 and 2, resulting in inhibition of tumor growth. Studies show that Reishi can have a number of other positive effects on the body such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-viral (through its interferon production), lowers blood pressure. It also acts as a cardiotonic by lowering serum and increasing the production of interleukin 1 and 2, which results in inhibition of tumor cholesterol, expectorant, anti-tissue, liver protecting and detoxifying, protection against ionizing radiation, antibacterial, and anti-HIV activity. Available fresh or as supplement)
• Grapefruit (Be careful on this one if you take any prescription medications!) Grapefruit helps keep weight down and is a good source of vitamin c and lycopene; however unique among fruits, grapefruit (and possibly grapefruit hybrids like the tangelo) interfere with stomach enzymes that break down certain drugs and may result in higher blood levels of the drugs than desired.
Grapefruit Cautions:
Drugs that are known to have potentially serious interactions with grapefruit products include: Anti-seizure drugs such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Tegretol) Antidepressants such as buspirone (BuSpar), clomipramine (Anafranil) and sertraline (Zoloft) Benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium) and triazolam (Halcion) Calcium channel blockers such as felodipine (Plendil), nifedipine (Adalat, Procardia, nimodipine (Nimotop), nisoldipine (Sular) and possibly verapamil (Isoptin, Verelan) Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease inhibitors such as saquinavir (Fortovase, Invirase) and indinavir (Crixivan) HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors such as simvastatin (Zocor), lovastatin (Mevacor) and atorvastatin (Lipitor) Immunosuppressant drugs such as cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), tacrolimus (Prograf) and sirolimus (Rapamune) Antiarrhythmic drugs such as amiodarone (Cordarone)
Note: Even waiting to take these medications up to 24 hours after you drink grapefruit juice doesn't prevent an interaction. The best advice is to avoid grapefruit products if you take any of those drugs, unless your doctor or pharmacist approves.)
• Omega-3 fats (found in fish oil, particularly cod liver oil, Omega 3 fats are not produced by the body, but are essential for good health. Lowers cholesterol, helps control blood pressure, and has strong anti-cancer properties)
• Dark Green Vegetables (especially spinach, and other dark greens such as mustard greens, collard greens and turnip greens. Good source of calcium, lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases, a variety of cancers, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts)
• Olive Oil, Hemp Oil and Other Healthy Oils (Including pumpkin oil, sesame oil, coconut oil and palm oil - preferably first press cold-pressed organic versions in dark bottles. Other cooking oils are unhealthy. Mediterranean men are 10 times less likely to die of heart disease and that is attributable to the fact that they use mostly olive oil instead of other cooking oils, and they use other oils in salad dressings and instead of butter or margarine. Olive oil reduces cholesterol levels, protects against cancer, is full of vitamin E, and beautifies skin, hair, nails. Coconut oil is one of the most healthy oils on the planet and Palm Oil is loaded with anti-oxidants and carotinoids.)
• Almonds (Eat 6 or more every day! Anti-cancer and a leading source of vitamin E and magnesium and offers protein, fiber, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron in 246 calories. As an added bonus, almonds and other nuts contain phytochemicals, which are plant chemicals that may provide powerful protection against heart disease, stroke, and other chronic disease. In addition, almonds contain an antioxidant compound called ellagic acid that supports the immune system and appears to have several anticancer properties.)
• Walnuts (an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, walnuts' concentration of omega-3s - a quarter-cup provides 90.8% of the daily value for these essential fats - has many potential health benefits ranging from cardiovascular protection, to the promotion of better cognitive function, to anti-inflammatory benefits helpful in asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis Also a good source of ellagic acid.)
• Flaxseeds (Best when ground, flaxseeds are even more beneficial than flaxseed oil, because flaxseeds contain the lignans and fiber that is removed in making the oil. Good source of omega-3s,lowers cholesterol, helps keep the colon clean, regulates blood sugar and anti-cancer, especially breast and prostrate cancer)
• Flaxseed Oil Mixed with Cottage Cheese (flaxseed oil mixed together with cottage cheese has been successfully used to prevent, treat and cure cancers, even inoperable “hopeless” ones, for many years by 7-time Nobel prize nominee, German biochemist and research scientist, Dr. Johanna Budwig, whose work followed up on the work of two previous Nobel laureates)
• Blueberries (They lower the risk of heart disease and cancer and help maintain youthful, healthy skin. Eat 1 to 2 cups a day. When they aren't in season, eat cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, currants, and purple grapes.)
• Other vegetables (such as asparagus, escarole, avocado - actually a fruit, fennel. beet greens, green and red cabbage, bok choy, kohlrabi, brussel's sprouts, romaine, red leaf, & green leaf lettuce, mustard greens, celery. onions , chicory, parsley, chinese cabbage, red, green, yellow and hot peppers, chives, collard greens, turnips, turnip greens, dandelion greens, endive, zucchini and summer squash)
• Beans, Lentils & Chickpeas (as long as you don’t have an insulin problem – the signs of which are excess weight, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Beans lower cholesterol, fight heart disease, stabilize blood sugar, reduce obesity, lessen cancer risk, and relieve hypertension. One California study showed that those who ate beans weekly were 40 percent less likely to die those who ate them less than once a weak.--Eat four 1/2-cup servings a week.)
• Pomegranate Juice (Higher in anti-oxidants than any other common fruit juice. Contains a very high concentration of the potent cancer-fighter ellagic acid. According to research presented in May 2005 to the American Urological Association, eight ounces of pomegranate juice had significant anti-cancer effects on prostrate cancer patients. Other recent studies suggest that pomegranate juice helps prevent hardening of the arteries and even reverses heart disease.)
• Oranges and Tangerines (They support heart health while preventing cancer, stroke, diabetes, and other chronic ailments. Eat one a day. Want more variety? Try lemons, grapefruit, kumquats, or limes.)
• Dark Grapes (Contains resveratrol, the potent anti-cancer and anti-aging ingredient found in red wine, effective with leukemia, melanoma, pancreatic, esophageal, breast, lung, colon, prostate, squamous cell, liver cancer and others. Grape leaves are supposed to contain 100 times the resveratol as grapes.)
• Black Cherries & tart cherries (contain the antioxidant anthocyanins which is responsible for the red color and which is higher in antioxidant properties than vitamins C and E. Tart cherries added to ground beef reduce mutagens in ground beef by 90% when cooking, and the flavor is equal or better than plain ground beef.)
• Apples/Apple Juice (It turns out that grandma was right – an apple a day keeps the doctor away! Apples are an excellent source of fiber, phenolic compounds (phytochemicals) and phytonutrients, such as the flavonoid quercetin, apples help reduce cholesterol, protect against cancer, especially prostrate cancer, reduce heart attack risk and promotes cardiovascular health. Note: If you have cancer, or have had cancer, apples are much preferred over apple juice due to the much higher sugar content of apple juice. Plus, whole apples include the added benefits of fiber and the phyto-nutrients contained in the apple skin.)
• Apricots, muskmelons and other fruits high in beta-carotene (In test-tube studies at Harvard University, beta-carotene had a direct toxic effect on cells, taken from malignant tumors. It also reduced the growth of lung cancer cells and altered the proteins needed for tumors to grow. Research also shows that beta-carotene can change in the body to retinoic acid, a substance used in clinical trials to treat certain cancers.)
• Berries (Cranberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, and other Berries are all excellent sources of vitamin C, phytochemicals and phytonutrients and area good source of ellagic acid.)
• Pecans, Brazil Nuts Pumpkin (Pumpkin lowers the risk of various cancers, while it promotes youthful, healthy skin. Want an alternative? Try carrots, carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and orange bell peppers.)
• Pumpkin seeds, Pistachios, Sesame Seeds (UNSALTED—and the pumpkin seeds are great!)
• Yogurt with beneficial fruit such as blueberries (avoid artificially sweetened yogurt, yogurt with soy, or high carb yogurt with added sweeteners. Yogurt helps the body’s ability to build bones, helps prevent and heal arthritis, and protects against ulcers. Yogurt that contains live bacterial cultures may help you to live longer, and may fortify your immune system. Research studies have shown that increased yogurt consumption, particularly in immuno-compromised populations such as the elderly, may enhance the immune response, which would in turn increase resistance to immune-related diseases. Some yogurt manufacturers pasteurize their yogurt products, while others do not. Although the aim of pasteurization is to kill any harmful bacteria, it also kills the beneficial lactic acid bacteria in the yogurt, substantially reducing its health benefits. Therefore, to fully enjoy the benefits of yogurt, look for those that feature “live active cultures” or “living yogurt cultures” on the label.)
• Wash all vegetables and fruits – especially those that aren’t organically grown (if you don’t wash your vegetables from the grocer’s, you very well may be doing more harm than good from the pesticides and preservatives they have been sprayed and treated with).
NOTE: Eat raw, organically grown fruits and vegetables whenever possible and don’t peel except when necessary – you are often peeling away the best vitamins and nutrients! A good rule of thumb is that raw fruits and vegetables are better than steamed, frozen or dried ones, which are better than boiled, baked or grilled ones, which are better than home canned ones, which are better than store-bought canned ones, which are better than no vegetables at all! Juices may substitute for raw fruit/vegetables, but avoid added sugar or other sweeteners.
Bad Things to Do & Consume
• Sugar and just about all sweeteners including corn syrup, fructose, honey, sucrose, maltodextrin, dextrose, molasses, rice milk, white grape juice, sweetened fruit juice, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, date sugar, cane sugar, corn sugar, beet sugar, succanat and lactose. (OK, this one may be hard to do, but if you have cancer, or have ever had cancer, you MUST cut all the sugar you can out of your diet because, quite simply, sugar feeds cancer! If you don’t have cancer, go very easy on the sugar, or, better still, substitute Stevia or Lo Han whenever possible.)
• Smoking and other tobacco products (You do want to live a long time, right?)
• Grilling, Frying, or cooking with high heat (Grilling can produce carcinogens, which are always present in charred meats and other foods. At high temperatures, certain natural constituents of the meat—the simple sugar glucose, the amino acid creatinine, and additional free amino acids—can chemically react to form carcinogenic heterocyclic amines (HCAs). Typically, the longer meat cooks at a high temperature, the greater the production of HCAs. Indeed, low-temperature cooking or a quick searing may generate none of the carcinogens. On January 31, 2005 the National Toxicology Program (NTP), part of the National Institutes of Health, published its latest update of materials known to cause cancer in people and others that are "reasonably anticipated" to do so and among the 246 agents on the lists are the heterocyclic amines that develop in meats when they're cooked too long at high temperature. Frying, especially in animal fats or processed vegetable oil is supremely unhealthy.)
• Microwaving – (The evils of microwaving are so bad and so dangerous that it gets it’s own chapter later in this book, titled “Nuke that Microwave Oven!”. Put simply, microwaving in plastic creates cancer causing dioxins and microwaving in ANY kind of container alters foods unnaturally so that nutrients are destroyed and cancer and disease causing compounds are created. Man has evolved to eat food cooked by heat from the outside in, not food cooked from the inside out by being bombarded with microwaves.)
• Aluminum cookware (Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, although there is a likelihood that the disease itself is responsible for most of the greater concentrations of aluminum found in the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers. If you must use aluminum Anodized aluminum is the best bet, because the anodizing process seals the surface of the cookware.)
• Teflon coated cookware (Teflon, or polytetraflouethylene, when cooked at any temperature causes fumes that are toxic to birds. Cooked at the easily obtainable stovetop level of 680°F, Teflon pans release at least six toxic gases, including two carcinogens, two global pollutants, and MFA, a chemical lethal to humans at low doses. At temperatures that are reached on stovetop drip pans (1000°F), non-stick coatings break down to a chemical warfare agent known as PFIB, and a chemical analog of the WWII nerve gas phosgene. Some products that use Polytetraflouethylene: Heat lamps, Portable heaters, Sole plates on irons, Ironing board covers, Burners on stove tops, Drip pans for burners, Broiler pans, Griddles, Many cooking utensils, Woks, Waffle makers, Electric skillets, Deep fryers, crock pots, Hot air popcorn poppers, Coffee makers, Bread makers, Non-stick rolling pins, Lollipop molds, Corkscrews, Never-Stick-Stainless Steel, Stockpots, Roasters, Non-stick gingerbread molds, Pizza pans, Tortilla presses.)
• Animal Fats (Animal fats are generally not so good for your cholesterol levels or your waistline, but the worst thing about most animal fats is likely the pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics they contain.)
• Trans Fats and Refined Oils(Trans Fats, or Hydrogenated Vegetable Fats, are the very worst fats of all, often found in fried foods and processed foods such as cookies, crackers and pastries. Refined oils lose most of their nutritional value in the refining process.)
• Red Meat (at the very least, limit it to no more than a lean 3 ounce un-charred portion of organically raised grass fed beef once or twice a week. Venison and beefalo are preferable to beef.)
• Potatoes (good grief – meat and potatoes too? Yes, sorry!)
• Sunburn and prolonged exposure to the sun without sun block
• Salt (Excess salt is linked causes high blood pressure and is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and life-threatening heart attacks each year. Most of us eat an average of 10 times more salt than we should, and no wonder, as it is found in abundance in most foods in a normal diet, processed and natural. The average fast food hamburger, for example, contains over twice the amount of salt one should eat in a day. Avoid foods high in salt, and avoid any added salt, except when large amounts are lost from the body through sweating.)
• Soda pops (eight teaspoons of sugar per can for naturally sweetened ones, dangerous artificial sweeteners in diet ones!)
• Tap Water (tap water has been shown to have traces of over 2100 toxic chemicals, including pesticides, and many of these have been shown to cause cancer, cell mutation, nervous disorders and possibly Alzheimer’s. Most of the tap water in the U.S. is chlorinated – we essentially put bleach into our drinking water because it is cheap. Besides the resveratrol in the red wines they drink, the French likely have much lower cancer rates because they drink oxygenated water instead of chlorinated. According to the U.S. Council Of Environmental Quality, "Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.").
• Processed Foods (including Breads, Pasta, Non Whole Grain Cereals , Bagels, French fries, Chips , Pretzels, Waffles, Pancakes, & commercial Baked goods)
• Peanut Butter (Most peanut butters are hydrogenated to keep from separating. If you must have peanut butter on rare occasions, natural peanut butter would be better, but even natural peanut butter often contains aflatoxins, near ubiquitous fungal poisons that naturally lace a range of foods in tiny traces—especially peanut butter. This known human carcinogen was among chemicals on the National Institute of Health’s National Toxicology Program’s first national compilation of cancer-causing agents, in 1980.)
• White bread and bleached flour (Just empty calories that provide little nutrition and contribute more to obesity than any other food substances in our diet. In the process of making flour white by bleaching it with dangerous chemicals like the ones that make linens white, half of the good unsaturated fatty acids that are high in food value are lost in the milling process alone, and virtually all the vitamin E is lost with the removal of wheat germ and bran. As a result, the remaining flour in the white bread you buy, contains only poor quality proteins and fattening starch. Also, about 50% of all calcium, 70% of phosphorus, 80% iron, 98% magnesium, 75% manganese, 50% potassium, and 65% of copper is destroyed. About 80% thiamin, 60% of riboflavin, 75% of niacin, 50% of pantothenic acid, and about 50% of Pyridoxine is also lost. )
• Alcohol (OK maybe a beer or two on occasion if you just have to, but no more! Much better would be an occasional glass of red wine during the evening)
• Soy or soy-based foods - except for fermented soy products such as miso (Sorry, tofu lovers, but, regardless of the hype of the well-heeled soy industry, non-fermented soy products can cause bad, bad things – and weakening your immune system is just one of them! For more information, reach the chapter in this book’s Hall of Shame section titled “Concerns Regarding Soy”.)
• Canola Oil that is not organic cold pressed “Super Canola Oil” and any foods containing processed Canola Oils (Surprised? Well, of all the cooking alls, only olive oil and hemp oil are healthy. Read your food contents labels carefully to avoid processed Canola – especially Peanut Butter labels. Most major peanut butter brands take out all the peanut oil and replace it with canola.)
• Margarines and cooking oils (See “Trans Fats, above, and the information about soy.)
• Foods of all kinds with high glycemic index and/or glycemic load values (Refer to the section of this book “Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load” for more information.)
• Aspartame (Nutrasweet), Sucralose (Splenda), Saccharine and other artificial sweeteners (All have demonstrated carcinogenic qualities and other health problems. Use Stevia or Lo Han, sold as supplements at health food stores and widely available on the web for less than $5 for a fifty packet box))
And last but by no means least,
• MSG (Avoid at all costs! Another villain of the highest order that gets its own chapter later in the “Hall of Shame” section of the book. MSG, or Monosodium glutamate, is described as a mutagen and reproductive effector by the Center for Disease Control in their Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances. It is used in a huge variety of foods and other products, and is disguised under at least 40 different names. It can cause cell mutations, brain damage, neuroendocrine disorders, seizures, headaches, asthma, obesity, diabetes, bladder pain and other ailments.)
Things to Do in Moderation
• Fish (the best fish are oily fish such as wild salmon and cold-water fish! Eat baked, roasted or poached – no frying or charring. Sadly, fish would be recommended as a “Do” and recommended in abundance if it weren’t for the fact that just about all fish are now showing signs of toxins, especially mercury.)
• Turkey (baked or roasted, small portions, no frying, charring or smoking)
• Other lean meats (choose organic, grass fed meats. Ostrich and bison are both better choices than beef)
• Eggs (Actually, eggs are pretty healthy for you, despite years of misinformation – so long as you select organic eggs from free ranging field hens or the Omega 3 eggs. Whole eggs do have a good dose of calories though, so an even better plan would be to mix your eggs 50/50 with an egg substitute that is made from 98%+ real eggs, provided it’s not one of the brands that contains ingredients you can’t readily pronounce!)
• Oat Bran, Rice Bran, Whole Wheat & Other Whole Grains (Oat and Rice Bran are best, but maintain a modest overall intake of grains regardless of your choice).
• Dairy Products (use no fat or low fat organic milk or substitute rice milk or almond milk – but use sparingly due to sugar content)
• Dark Chocolate (Dark Chocolate made with 60% or more cocoa has been shown to have health benefits for the heart and to enhance mood; however, if you have cancer, the added sugar is probably not worth the benefits of the chocolate)
• Beets, Jicima, Carrots, Winter Squashes, Yams, & Eggplant (use in moderation due to high carbs, although yams have some very good anti-cancer properties)
• Fermented soy products (Soy protein is good for helping to lower “bad” cholesterol; however, only fermented soy products are safe. Traditional fermented soy products such as miso, natto and tempeh, which are usually made with organically grown soybeans, have a long history of use that is generally beneficial when combined with other elements of the Oriental diet including rice, sea foods, fish broth, organ meats and fermented vegetables. While fermented soy products contain protein, vitamins, anti-carcinogenic substances and important fatty acids, they can under no circumstances be called nutritionally complete. The soybean lacks vital sulfur-containing amino acids cystine and methionine. These are usually supplied by rice and other grains in areas where the soybean is traditionally consumed. Soy should never be considered as a substitute for animal products like meat or milk. Claims that fermented soy products like tempeh can be relied on as a source of vitamin B12, necessary for healthy blood and nervous system, have not been supported by scientific research. Finally, soybeans do not supply all-important fat soluble vitamins D and preformed A (retinol) which act as catalysts for the proper absorption and utilization of all minerals and water soluble vitamins in the diet. Soy products actually increase requirements for vitamins B12 and D.)
Supplements
• Complete Multi-vitamins (those which include anti-oxidants such as A, C & E and magnesium—and should contain lutein, lycoprene, magnesium, selenium and other trace minerals)
• ABM extract (from the Agaricus Blazei Murrell mushroom also know as Agaricus Brasiliensis and is called “Mushroom of the Gods” in Brazil, perhaps for good reason, because the ABM mushroom contains more of the cancer-killing and tumor-inhibiting polysaccharide beta glucan than Shitake, Reishi, Maitake or any other known mushroom or fungi. Perhaps the most powerful anti-cancer mushroom of all, and together with Oleander extract, one of the most potent cancer-fighters and immune boosters to be found! For more information on this powerful magical mushroom, including an excellent source for ordering proven extracts based on the ABM mushroom , please see the section in this book titled “The Mushroom of the Gods”)
• AHCC (Also known as the brand name ImmPower, it is derived from the mycelia of several species of mushrooms including the shiitake. Very powerful anti-cancer properties have been reported.)
• Coriolus Versicolor extract (from the Asian Turkey Tail mushroom. Contains polysaccharides [PSK] and polysaccharopeptides [PSP])-- effective for acute leukemia and stomach, esophagus, colorectal, lung cancer; PS is effective with many types of cancer (at least early and mid-stage cancer), including lung cancer and particularly stomach & colon cancer; NCI reportedly stated that PSK has been "contemplated for use against...mammary cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, such as those of the esophagus, stomach...colon; lung...brain tumors" and that PSP "has...antitumor activities, inhibiting Ehrlich ascites tumors, leukemia, and sarcoma...gastric tumor, lymph, and monocytic leukemia"; good to take during chemo & radiation - including acute leukemia patients)
• Graviola (or Annona muricata. Reportedly, there are over twenty laboratory studies showing Graviola to be more powerful than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapy. However, unlike Adriamycin which can make you very sick, knock out your hair, and even cause death (in some cases), Graviola does no collateral damage. There are no side effects. In laboratory studies, Graviola selectively hunts down and kills 12 different types of cancer cells (without harming healthy cells) including breast, prostate, lung, colon, and pancreatic cancer. Additionally, it actually boosts your immune system making the patient feel healthier and stronger and improves overall energy and outlook on life.)
• Paw Paw (Paw Paw belongs to the family of plants known as the Annonaceae and is a cousin to Graviola. One human trial of patients with diagnosed cancers of various kinds reported that as many as 8 in 10 found some benefit from using Paw Paw.)
• Fish Oil (EPA, eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, are the two principal omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. The body can manufacture both EPA and DHA from another essential fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) but only to a limited extent. Increased consumption of fish oil can help slow the progression of atherosclerosis and thereby prevent heart attacks, and also reduce risk of sudden death due to cardiac arrythmias. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce triglyceride levels, raise levels of HDL ("good" cholesterol, thin the blood, reduce levels of homocysteine and reduce blood pressure. EPA and DHA are useful in treating symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, especially in early stages of the disease, and in treatment of menstrual cramps, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), lupus, and IgA nephropathy. Omega-3s help depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder, borderline personality disorder, dyslexia and cognitive impairment. Other uses of fish oils include asthma, Raynaud's phenomenon (abnormal sensitivity of hands and feet to cold), chronic fatigue syndrome, cystic fibrosis, osteoporosis, reducing the risk of prostate cancer and preventing weight loss during cancer chemotherapy. DHA is important for normal development and functioning of the brain and retina in the fetus and in infants and may also reduce the risk of premature delivery in pregnant women.)
• Alpha-linolenic Acid (ALA is an omega-3 fatty acid that, to a limited extent, can be converted in the body into two other important omega-3's — EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Of all the plant seeds, flaxseed (also known as flax seed or linseed) contains the highest concentration of ALA —in fact, 55% of the oil in flaxseed is ALA. Phytoplankton and algae are also rich sources. The oil from hemp and black currant seeds also contain, respectively, 19% and 13% ALA.)
• Alpha-lipoic acid (also known as a-lipoic acid, an anti-oxidant recharger, helps lower blood sugar and treats neuropathies in people with diabetes. Has been shown to effectively treat Hepatitis-C in combination with milk thistle and selenium)
• B-Complex Vitamins (B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5, B-6, B-12, Folate & Niacin) (Not made by the body, these must be obtained via the diet or by supplements. B-Vitamins help prevent heart disease, boost the immune system and protect against cancer. Niacin helps lower cholesterol.)
• Bilberry (Bilberry, or Vaccinium myrtillus, contains nutrients that protect eyes from eyestrain or fatigue, and can improve circulation to the eyes. Helps improve vision and fight macular degeneration)
• Grape seed Extract (Grape seed extract is a rich source of potent antioxidant bioflavonoids known as proanthocyanidins. Grape seed extract provides 92-95% potency, as compared to 80-84% yielded by pine bark. This means that its antioxidant and nutritional properties are far superior. According to proanthocyanidin researcher, Dr. Jack Masquelier, only grape seeds contain powerful gallic esters, dynamic ingredients in the battle against free radicals.)
• Spirulina (Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is nearly two-thirds protein. It also has large amounts of chlorophyll and is very valuable to help detoxify the body from heavy metals and radiation. It is also loaded with GLA, which is the main essential fatty acid present in evening primrose or borage oil. A superior source of digestible protein. Contains 12 times the protein of beef. Easier on the digestive system than chlorella, which can cause diarrhea in sensitive individuals. The best source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a "good" fat necessary for the human brain, proper heart function, and other body systems. Contains phycocyanin, a potent anti-cancer phytochemical that also gives spirulina its characteristic blue hue and that has been shown to destroy cancer cells and tumors. Spirulina has incredible health benefits and is probably one of the main reasons why fish are so healthy for you. It is highly likely you can obtain even more benefits from the Spirulina with none of the complications of heavy metal or pesticide contamination present in nearly all fish.)
• Chlorella (A better source of chlorophyll, which makes it more detoxifying and cleansing. It is especially good for people with liver disorders or people who drink or smoke. It is very helpful for people with dry stools who suffer from constipation. It is especially good for people who need "rebuilding" -- people who suffer from degenerative diseases (muscle, nervous system, etc.) or people who are frail. Contains Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF), which boosts the immune system, reverses cancer, and offers other health benefits. CGF also helps repair nerve tissues throughout the body and is excellent for treating degenerative brain and nerve disorders.)
• Cat’s Claw (Also known as Una de gato, life-giving vine of Peru, and hawk's claw, this potent anti-cancer herb has been used historically by the natives of South America as a cancer remedy. Recent studies confirm that immune response is promoted by using Cats Claw, and that it enhances T-Cell production. Also used for Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, leaky bowel syndrome, colitis, hemorrhoids, fistulas, gastritis, ulcers, parasites, intestinal flora imbalance, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, environmental toxic poisoning, organic depression and HIV.)
• Vitamin C - at least 1000 iu of per day (Vitamin C helps the body produce collagen, a basic component of connective tissue. Collagen is an important structural element in blood vessel walls, gums, and bones, making it particularly important to anyone recovering from wounds or surgery. Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant, scavenging potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. Although not firmly established by clinical trials, this antioxidant activity may help boost immune function and protect against cancer, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration of the retina, and other chronic diseases. Vitamin C intake may be particularly helpful to smokers, who may suffer from oxidative stress and cell damage, which can deplete the body's store of vitamin C. Vitamin C also enhances iron absorption from supplements and plant foods.)
• Vitamin E - 800 units per day (Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) is an anti-oxidant that assists in maintaining cell integrity and may. prevent or delay the ravaging illnesses so common with aging, including heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's, according to research from the University of Florida that was published in the journal Biological Research for Nursing. It is easily obtained from sunflower, safflower, canola, and olive oils; also from many grains, nuts, fruits as well as fatty parts of meats. Only a small amount of vitamin E is needed to meet normal daily requirements; however, research using vitamin E at far higher doses than the daily requirement has provided evidence that it may be helpful for preventing or treating various medical conditions including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, rheumatoid arthritis menstrual pain, cardiac autonomic neuropathy (a complication of diabetes), low sperm count, restless leg syndrome, and inflammation of eye tissues. Vitamin E improves seniors' immune response and helps prevent prostrate cancer and bladder cancer.)
• Milk Thistle (Certified by the German E-Commission, the German equivalent of the FDA, to be effective in not only protecting the liver, but in actually helping the liver regenerate. Taken in advance, can protect against liver damage from alcohol. Also helps people with hepatitis, cirrhosis and other liver conditions)
• Co-enzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone, is a naturally occurring anti-oxidant compound and is used for energy production within cells. Helps treat congestive heart failure and delay the progression of Parkinson's disease, muscular dystrophy, AIDS, hypertension, and cancer.)
• Lutein (Helps prevent age-related macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness in the U.S., available in a wide variety of foods, most adults in the U.S. consume less lutein than the amount believed to lower their risk of macular degeneration.)
• Lycopene (Tomatoes are the best natural source. Helps prevent heart attack and cancer, especially prostrate cancer)
• Calcium (obtained from dairy products, green leafy vegetables and kale. Calcium is critical for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth, where 99% of the mineral is found in the body. The rest is present in the blood, extra-cellular fluid, muscle and other tissues, where it plays a role in contraction and vasodilation, muscle contraction, nerve transmission and glandular secretions. Calcium can slow bone loss in postmenopausal woman, may reduce PMS symptoms, and is associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer. Calcium can also reduce hypertension due to calcium deficiency. Recommended dose is 500 mg per day taken along with vitamin D. May reduce the absorption of antibiotics.)
• Glucosamine & Chondrotin (Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplements are used to slow the progression of osteoarthritis — the deterioration of cartilage between joint bones — and to reduce the associated pain. Glucosamine is thought to promote the formation and repair of cartilage. Chondroitin is believed to promote water retention and elasticity in cartilage and inhibit enzymes that break down cartilage.)
• MSM (MSM, or methylsulphonylmethane, is used primarily for treating pain associated with osteoarthritis and has been proposed for treating other conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation of the bladder wall (interstitial cystitis), snoring, muscle spasm, and cancer. Many additional claims are found on MSM products, including skin-softening and nail-strengthening effects. The mechanism by which MSM may work isn't well understood, although it's known to contribute sulfur to the body, which can then be used to synthesize certain amino acids (building blocks for proteins), and it can act as an antioxidant. MSM is also used in veterinary medicine to treat pain and inflammation, but its effectiveness has not been well studied.)
• Magnesium (is needed for proper metabolism and nervous system functioning)
• Selenium (When used with milk thistle and a-lipoic acid has been shown to cure Hepatitis-C. Harvard researchers found that men with the highest levels of this mineral had a 48 percent lower risk of advanced prostate cancer. It may also ward off lung cancer. Best dosage for men: 200 mcg from selenium yeast daily. Natural sources: Brazil nuts, meat. Interactions: May reduce the effectiveness of statins; high doses decrease vitamin C absorption)
• Vitamin D (Note: Vitamin D - no longer thought of as a true vitamin - is important to good health and good bones, yet it is also the most toxic of all the vitamins, and more than 4 times the minimum daily allowance can be harmful and can actually cause bone loss and other problems)
• Bromelain (this potent pineapple plant extract is quite a wonder into itself – it helps absorption of antibiotics, vitamins and supplements and it has powerful healing and anti-tumor properties as well)
• Saw Palmetto (used to improve urinary flow and reduce the frequency and urgency of urination in men with prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH). Saw palmetto is believed to inhibit the actions of testosterone on the prostate that cause prostate enlargement and interference with urinary flow. Saw palmetto has also been used to treat bladder inflammation (cystitis), chronic bronchitis, laryngitis, and asthma-associated nasal inflammation, among other conditions. Other ingredients used to treat prostrate problems are: pygeum bark, pumpkin seed oil, and stinging nettle root, and beta-sitosterol.)
• Astralagus (has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than two thousand years. The root of the plant is commonly used in herbal remedies as a base ingredient to help with various ailments. The Astralagus root is used to promote wound healing and stimulate the immune system by boosting white blood cell production and coaxing them to work harder. Several studies conducted in China found that Astralagus improved survival in some cancer patients, however the quality of these trials is doubtful, thus the value of these findings is limited. Studies suggest that oral or nasal use of the herb may also protect against the common cold and flu. One drop of tincture is taken two to three times per day. The dried root is taken in dosages of 1- 4 grams three times per day. The most potent Astralagus supplements contain a standardized extract of the root, with 0.5% glucosides and 70% polysaccharides. Research suggests that the body can develop a tolerance to immune-stimulating herbs such as Astralagus if it is taken for long periods. Therefore some experts recommend alternating Astralagus with other immune system-enhancing herb.)
• Probiotic Supplements and Foods (Including Lactobacillus, Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, etc.) (Probiotics work by colonizing the small intestine and crowding out disease-causing bacteria, thereby restoring balance to the intestinal flora. They may also produce substances that inhibit pathogenic bacteria, compete for nutrients with them, and stimulate the body's own immune system.)
• Ginseng (Ginseng is the dried root of one of several species of the Araliaceae family of herbs. The most commonly used type is Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), often sold as Panax, Chinese, or Korean ginseng. Closely related to Asian ginseng is American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.), which is sometimes preferred for its milder effects. Siberian ginseng, also called eleuthero isn't as closely related to the other two and is also considered weaker in action. Ginseng is widely used to improve overall energy and vitality, particularly during times of fatigue or stress. Studies show its potential value in normalizing glucose levels after meals in diabetics, stimulating immune function, treating male impotence and, when used with Ginkgo biloba, improving memory and symptoms of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Studies of Asian ginsengs have repeatedly documented improvements in exercise performance and improvements in muscular strength, maximal oxygen uptake, work capacity, fuel homeostasis, serum lactate, heart rate, visual and auditory reaction times, alertness, and psychomotor skills.)
• Ginko Biloba (typically an extract made from leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree and contains many phytochemicals. Ginkgo biloba has become a widely used dietary supplement for increasing cognitive functions in elderly people, delaying the progression of Alzheimer's disease, increasing blood flow to the legs, treating tinnitus (ringing in the ear) of a circulatory origin, as well as treating depression and asthma.)
• Huperzine A (Huperzine A, in dietary supplements, is a chemical purified from leaves of the Chinese toothed club moss (Huperzia serrata) or synthetically manufactured. Huperzine A, has been shown to improve memory, thinking, and behavioral function in people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. It may also protect neurons from cell death caused by toxic levels of glutamate and protect against some of the effects of chemical nerve agents used in warfare, such as soman.)
• Mutamba (Mutamba bark is a rich source of the natural chemical procyanidin B-2, which has anti-tumorous and anti-cancerous effects (even against melanoma) as well as lowers blood pressure and protects the kidneys.)
• Oleander Extracts (Oleander Soup/Anvirzel™) (one of the most potent anti-cancer substances on the planet. If you, or anyone you know or care about ever has cancer ,HIV-AIDS, hepatitis-C, psoriasis or any other immune disorder or cell-proliferative disease, you should consider trying oleander soup or the patented commercial oleander extract Anvirzel™. Oleander extracts, including the oleander soup you can make at home, have cured various cancers, with high success rates, in conditions from initial stages all the way to stage 4 and diagnosed as hopeless! They also work to prevent cancers of all kinds, cure hepatitis C & psoriasis, and have even been reported to reverse AIDS! For whatever reason, oleander extracts seem to attack bad cells, and ONLY bad cells, that have just about anything to do with immune system disorders, while also boosting the body’s immune system.
Lifestyle Advice
• Avoid Stress at all costs!
• Get Plenty of sunshine – (a half hour each day. The sun is the great energizer and source of life. It also converts cholesterol to vitamin D)
• Wear Sun block whenever you are in the sun for any length of time
• Get Lots of Fresh Air (open those windows! Eat your lunches outside. Go for walks daily. Sleep with the windows open at night whenever possible – if worried, get burglar bars.)
• Get Air Purifiers
• Invest in a Good Water Filtration System (The average glass of tap water in the U.S. contains traces of over 2000 chemicals, many of which are pesticides, carcinogens, solvents and poisons. Drinking filtered water is not enough – your body absorbs more chlorine and fluorine from a bath or shower than it does in 8 glasses of tap water.)
• Take time to relax and meditate.
• Have fun and be happy! Laughter is good medicine for the body and soul!
• Get plenty or sleep – 8 hours each night
• Exercise every day in moderation (There are just too many benefits to list – just realize this: it doesn’t have to be overly hard or painful, but it really should be done if you want to live longer, healthier and happier. Be sure to include daily stretching exercises. Any place that is stiff or has restricted movement is a site that is inviting disease.)
• Eat a healthy breakfast every day (just be sure to include fruits, juices and other healthy foods, such as omega 3 eggs, yogurt with blueberries, and oatmeal, and don’t overly rely on grains, cereals and bread. Avoid sugar and coffee – try hot green tea instead.)
• Drink lots of filtered water or reverse osmosis distilled water and green tea.
• Liver Cleanse (Perform once a year at least. The liver is the body’s main detoxification site and it is essential to have a liver in good condition to maintain overall good health. To cleanse you liver, see the Liver Cleanse section of this book)
• Colon Cleanse (Also perform once a year. Bowel movements are the basis of your health. If you don't have at least 1 bowel movement per day, you are already walking your way toward disease. It is said that death begins in the colon, and colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. See the Colon Cleanse section of this book.)
